General Race Info
Prize Giving, Medals and Mementoes
Awards presentations will take place at the end of race. See this registration page for eligibility details for medals and prizes
Electronic timing
The SPORTident (SI) electronic punching system will be used for all races. SI cards can be rented when registering.
During the race, in case of SI unit failure (no flash or no beep) it's the runner's responsibility to punch the map with the backup pin-punch. At least, that is what is supposed to happen. But since this is a low key event we will not be putting out backup pin-punches. We will use other evidence to attempt to confirm you visited the control (such as other people having the same experience of the control not working).
Start Procedure
There will be no assigned start times for any of the races! We will be using a "punching start".
Be sure to allow enough time to get to the start area in time to start within the "start window" for the event as the timing is tight.
Everyone will require the following at the start line:
Championship Classes and Open Classes – there will be no assigned start times!

Everyone will require the following at the start line:
- Race Bib
- SI punch - you must have your correct SI finger stick
- Whistle - more mandatory gear
- Bear spray ... adults (18 and over) must carry bear spray; it is optional for those under 18. See the bear spray info page for more details.
Championship Classes and Open Classes – there will be no assigned start times!
- We will be using a 3-box start procedure but with no assigned start times. There will be a punching start.
- Arrive at the start area within the listed "start window".
- Line up in the correct line, outside of the start box, according to the "Class" that you will be running (example M12 or W45). (This will be marked at the start. For example: M/W10, M/W12 may be directed to line #1, etc.)
- Once you reach the front of the line, your start procedure will begin.
- On the "BEEP", you will be called into the first "box". The Start Crew will check your name/class , SI #, check that you have a race bib, a whistle and bear spray (See the bear spray info page for more details) and you will be asked to punch a "check" control unit.
- On the next "BEEP" (in one minute), you will move to the second "box". Here you can pick up your loose control descriptions.
- On the next "BEEP" you will enter the third "box" where you will be directed to a bin containing your map. You will write your name on the back of the map and take it to the Start Crew person in that box so that they can check it is the proper map for you and you will then receive any final start instructions.
- On the next "BEEP" you can leave the start box, punch the start control unit and then follow the marked route to the start triangle that is marked on your map. There is no punch at the start triangle. The distance to the start triangle may be marked on your map, as shown in the example below.
Example of how the distance to the start may be indicated. In this example, there will be a 65m marked route from the start of timing (map pickup) to the start triangle. This route will be marked on the map and in the terrain.
Note that not all races will use this technique. In races that don't use the technique, the distance to the start triangle will be noted at the map pickup. |

Shadowing
- For the past few years, the Canmore Nordic Centre and surrounding Bow Valley areas have been faced with closures due to wildlife activity. This year is no different. For "Safety Reasons", the organizers have changed the rules around "shadowing" of children on courses. We will have "Marshals" with bear spray, patrolling along the course for M/W10 and under and M/W12 and under (Course 1 and 2). At this event we are allowing "Shadowing" by an adult who is carrying Bear Spray, for any child under the age of 18. We strongly recommend that children 12 and under and small sized children be shadowed. The shadowing of older children will be left to the discretion of the parent/child. Any child that is shadowed will be eligible for awards in their class. We are encouraging parents to not shadow their own children due to "fairness", but to work with other parents/adults to shadow other's children where ever possible. (Ask at the registration desk or at the start area and we can help set you up with another family looking for a shadow.)
- For people who will do the shadowing, if you are entered in a championship class you must run your race first and then do the shadowing. In addition, regarding shadowing in the AOC Sprint distance race: since the AOC Long is in the same competition area on the following day, if you are competitive in your Long championship class then in the spirit of fair play we encourage you to find someone else to shadow your kids in the Sprint. The organizers reserve the right to declare shadowers in the Sprint race ineligible for medals & prizes in the Long.
