Course Notes for AOC Long event info on website:
- The Long event generally follows the new course and category guidelines approved in April 2017. There is a new “M/W10 and under” class, and the old M/W17-20 class has been split into M/W17-18 and M/W19-20 to improve the progression of course length and technical difficulty for these age groups. The new non-competitive age classes M/W15-16B, M/W17-20B and M/W21B are intended for people who want to race in their age group but on a shorter course with less navigational difficulty than the corresponding competitive age class. The new M/W10 and under course is as easy as we could possibly make it; it has flagging leading you out of the start triangle, and there is one flagged leg. The new M/W11-12 and Beginner courses have slightly more technical difficulty than the old guidelines specified: in this event, they follow the flagging out of the start triangle but they have longer legs (2 legs are over 300m), a couple of route choices on trails, and some legs have several path junctions along 1 leg.
- On the courses for M/W10 and under, M/W11-12 and Beginners, there is one control at a 6-way trail junction! There is a sign there that points M/W10 and under in one direction to their next control, and it points M/W11-12 and Beginners in a different direction to their next control. You need to know what course you are doing, to follow this sign correctly!
- Water: There is no water on course for Beginner, M/W10, M/W11-12, M/W13-14 and M/W15-16B because the recommended winning times are less than 35 minutes. Everyone else does have water at 2 or more control locations on their course.
- There is a new trail adjacent to the route to Start 1 that is not marked on the map. It is a tightly winding narrow trail on the right hand side as you start going up the steep hill across from the Day Lodge. This does not affect any courses.
- Warmup maps: Be sure you collect the correct warmup map when you get your bib at the registration/info desk. There is a different warmup map for each of the 3 scales. In addition, there is a separate warmup map for those going to Start 2 (M/W75, M/W80 and M/W85)
- Scales for Long courses and warmup maps:
- 1:15,000 for M21E, M19-20,W21E and W19-20
- 1:7,500 is for Beginner, M/W10 and under, M/W11-12, M/W75, M/W80, M/W85
- 1:10,000 is for everyone else
- The special features on the map are: single tree, rootstock, disc golf basket, large powerline pylon/other man-made object. Note that powerlines are omitted for clarity.
- Start info: There are 2 starts. “Start 2” is for M/W75, M/W80 and M/W85 – these people must meet at the “Wax Building” at the arena at 10:15am to be escorted to Start 2 all together. Start 1 is for everyone else; it is 1km and 80m climb from the Arena. There are no pre-assigned start times for anyone. The start window is 10:00 – 11:00am, and juniors start no earlier than 10:20am. Your time begins when you punch the start SI unit at the departure line, but this is NOT the start triangle – you must go 50-70m along a marked route from the start punch to the flag marking the start triangle, which does not have a punch.
- Maximum times: Sport (score-O course) maximum time is 75 minutes. The maximum time for everyone else is 3 hours. You MUST report to the download station even if you do not finish your course.
